PEPH Annual Meeting: Communication Research in Environmental Health Sciences – Environmental Health Literacy

This year we are focusing the PEPH meeting on Environmental Health Literacy (EHL). We chose this topic to capitalize on the fact that EHL is coalescing as a distinct field within health education and risk communication, and is a term that researchers and federal agencies are increasingly using to denote literacy initiatives related to environmental health sciences research. The process of becoming environmentally health literate entails raising scientific and environmental literacy and numeracy among the general public while increasing awareness of specific exposures and their potential health effects. While NIEHS programs have supported the development of risk communication strategies, environmental health messages, and informational materials, little has been done to examine their impact on EHL or to understand the elements of successful environmental health messages. As a new field, methods to raise EHL are in development; therefore, attention to the evaluation of these approaches and validation of their effectiveness is needed.
- Underscore the importance of communication research to environmental health sciences;
- Identify the parameters of environmental health literacy;
- Highlight successful projects and approaches that are relevant to EHL;
- Garner input from those with expertise in the various fields that comprise Communications Research in the Environmental Health Sciences to examine next steps to advance EHL;
- Identify research opportunities, evaluation and validation tools, and partners; and
- Further NIEHS' commitment to communication research outlined in Goal 11 of the NIEHS Strategic Plan.

The scholarship application deadline has passed and scholarship applications are no longer being accepted.
September 22 and 23: will include oral presentations and panel discussions, and ample opportunity for small group interactions. There will be no concurrent breakouts so that we can maximize input from all participants.
September 24: will be comprised of 90-minute, hands-on workshops related to EHL.
