Chromium

Superfund Basic Research Program

Chromium is a cancer-causing metal often found in complex mixtures at Superfund sites. While human exposure to certain forms of chromium has demonstrated an increase risk of cancer, the mechanism by which this metal acts is not well understood. SBRP-funded research has focused on understanding how chromium acts alone and in synergy with other metals to cause genetic damage and cancer. Research has also been extended to highlight the removal of chromium from water supplies via microbial reduction and other remediation methods.
