Metals in the environment are commonly found as mixtures. Scientific approaches that have been used to assess the effects of single metals on biological systems are inadequate to address the potential health consequences that may arise from exposure to metal mixtures. Presently there is little knowledge on how metal mixtures should be assessed in the environment. SBRP-funded researchers are providing a foundation of knowledge for the environmental policy-makers and public health officials challenged to design and implement strategies that reduce adverse health affects resulting for the exposure to metal mixtures.
