Nephrotoxicity is defined as renal disease or kidney dysfunction that arises as a direct or indirect result of exposure to medicines, and industrial or environmental chemicals. Research has demonstrated that there are a number of chemicals that may adversely affect one or more of the anatomical elements of the kidney. While some kidney cells have the ability to repair themselves from such toxic damage, others do not. The findings from such research will aid in the development of more effective and accurate risk assessment procedures and analyses.
