Epidemiology studies seek to understand the underlying causes of diseases and injuries in human populations. Further, epidemiology research seeks to identify factors that influence disease distribution. For example, studies have shown that inorganic arsenic can increase the risk of certain types of cancers (bladder, skin, kidney, and others). One current SBRP-funded research project seeks to quantify carcinogenic risks due to arsenic exposure at levels commonly found in the United States. This study also seeks to identify subgroup populations within the test groups who are more susceptible to arsenic-associated cancers due to other factors (diet, exposure to other cancer-causing substances, genetics, etc.). Such studies are important, as they help to identify risks that could be reduced or eliminated through the application of appropriate prevention strategies.
