The "Population-based Model Organism Research for G x E Exploration in Complex Disease Outcomes (RFA-ES-17-009)" RFA was designed to stimulate the use of population-based model organism resources in the environmental health and toxicology community. It funded proof-of-principle studies that highlight the advantages and unique benefits of these resources for environmental health-related questions. This research will hopefully have far-reaching effects by accelerating this emerging field for the environmental health and toxicology communities with the rapid dissemination of data, resources, and publications. Grant recipients were selected to highlight the strengths and utility of the mouse Collaborative Cross/Diversity Outbred design, several distinct Drosophila and c. elegans reference panels, and the Medaka fish population panel.

The first day of the meeting is open and will include project overviews and updates from each of the seven groups funded under this RFA as well as general discussions related to the utility and future of these resources for the environmental health and toxicology communities. The second day of the meeting only includes grantees and will focus on collaborative opportunities across projects.

Meeting Goals

  1. Bring together population-based model organism grantees funded under this RFA and related experts of the scientific community to discuss work in progress and opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
  2. Discuss how these population-based model organisms might inform human health risk assessment and classical toxicity testing paradigms.
  3. Explore opportunities to integrate data across diverse population-based species and platforms.
  4. Discuss future efforts to move this field forward in the environmental health and toxicology communities.
