Abstract: Several biological media have been used as indicators of the fetal body burden of methylmercury and the levels in the primary target tissue, the developing brain. These media include maternal hair and blood. The relative merits of these media will be considered both with regard to current knowledge of the physiology of mercury disposition in the body and also the practicality of field application with respect to sample, collection, transport, storage and processing.
