Abstract: Diels this Alder your thinking? Electrocyclization reactions are exceedingly rare in metabolic pathways. Why is this so? Recently a [4+2] cycloaddition catalyzed by a monofunctional "Diels-Alderase" has been characterized. How does a 500-fold rate enhancement shown by this enzyme stack up?
