Final Progress Reports

Year:   2017

The Louisiana State University (LSU) SRP Community Engagement Core (CEC) expanded its work to facilitate bi-directional communication between SRP researchers and the residents of Louisiana's Industrial Corridor, home to multiple Superfund and hazardous waste sites. The CEC formed a new partnership with the Louisiana Inter-Church Council's Commission on the Stewardship of the Environment; the CEC leader, Margaret Reams, Ph.D., was appointed to the Commission in September. The Commission will use the Louisiana Citizen's Guide to Environmental Engagement – a guidebook written by the CEC team and community partner, the Louisiana Environmental Action Network - in the Commission's "Train-the-Trainer Event for Creation Care," a one-day workshop to be held on March 1, 2018, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Participants will include spiritual leaders of communities within Louisiana's Industrial Corridor, with the overall goal to promote individual and collective action to reduce exposure risks and improve the health and safety of these residents. In addition to the LSU SRP CEC, other groups participating will include the Restore the Mississippi River Delta Coalition, Louisiana Bucket Brigade, Gulf Restoration Network, and Alliance for Affordable Energy. Also, the CEC expanded its community engagement in North Baton Rouge near the Superfund site, Devil's Swamp, through a kick-off workshop in February with the Sierra Club of Baton Rouge and the Greater King David Baptist Church to answer residents' questions concerning exposure risks, clean-up options, and the Superfund statute. A series of three workshops for SRP researchers, trainees, community leaders, and residents is planned for 2018.
