Significance

Mr. John Yong continues to serve as the Financial Administrator of the SRP. Since its inception, he has worked closely with the administrators of the cores and projects, providing overall supervision of the financial and administrative aspects of the grant. This involves the many subcontracts involved in the projects, as well as IRB protocols that cover the various activities.

Annual SRP Meeting

The Administration Core supported travel for several trainees to the 26th Annual SRP Conference in Baton Rouge in October. The Center was pleased to have the following trainees present their work:
--Kelsey Gleason (the Geochemical Processes Affecting Temporal Variability in Soil Metal Bioaccessibility project, "Contamination of Turmeric is a Potential Source of Lead Exposure for Bangladeshi Children")
--Peter Wagner (the Genetic Mechanisms of Metal Neurotoxicityproject, "RNA sequencing gives insights into lead neurotoxicity in neural stem cells") Peter won the third place poster award for this poster
--Christine Dobson (the Genetic Epidemiology of Neurodevelopmental Metal Toxicity project, "Dietary intake and association with cord blood Cd in two geographic areas in Bangladesh")
--Mason Stahl (the Arsenic and Manganese Mobility: Land Use, Redox Shifts, and Environmental Sensors project, "Crab Burrows Deliver Reactive Water to Aquifers in Bangladesh")
--Yongmei Shen (the Geochemical Processes Affecting Temporal Variability in Soil Metal Bioaccessibility project, "Linking Environmental Geochemistry with Bioaccessibility and Human Health Risks of Metals in Soils")

In addition to trainee representation, the Geochemical Processes Affecting Temporal Variability in Soil Metal Bioaccessibilityproject leader, James Shine gave a talk entitled, "Chemical speciation in soils and sediments: The role of biogeochemistry in risk assessment and environmental decision-making" during the scientific session: Emerging Contaminants and Pollutant Mixtures. Liz Guzy of the RTC also presented a poster entitled "Investigator-Led Research Translation at Geophysics Workshop for Groundwater Professionals and Students in Dhaka, Bangladesh". Ann Backus and Katherine von Stackelberg, from the Research Translation Core, also attended, as did Program Director, David Bellinger, and Maitreyi Mazumdar, Co-Leader of the Epidemiology of Developmental Windows, Metal Mixtures and Neurodevelopment project.
