The University of Washington (UW) Sustainable Technology, Alternate Chemistry – Training and Education Center (STAC-TEC) is developing and testing training materials and other materials to augment existing courses with a focus on developing sustainable solutions to potential workplace health and safety risks associated with biotechnology, nanotechnology, alternative (green) chemistry, and green landscaping.

As part of the UW Green Labs certification program, 20 University of Washington Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) laboratories are determining how they can make their laboratory practices/processes more sustainable. Information learned will be used to create case study/best practices webinars covering:

  • An overview and description of the baseline data collection process
  • Integrating green chemistry/sustainability principles
  • Mixed-waste management
  • Biotechnology material challenges

 

Teaching Materials

  • The STAC-TEC team has begun working on teaching materials (PowerPoint slides and short videos) for the existing UW Biofilms and Bioprocess Engineering courses. Biofilms will be demonstrated in health, the environment, and energy production.
  • Washington State University (WSU) also organized a workshop to teach biofilm technologies July 21 - August 1, 2014. With support from this grant, WSU was able to develop and include an electrochemistry workshop within the biofilms summer school.
  • Course materials (PowerPoint slides and generated images) covering nano-biotechnology have been developed. They include information regarding: Positive effects of nanoparticles (NPs), toxicity of NPs, physiochemical properties of NPs, how to make NPs, quantum dots and their application in medicine, and utilization of NPs in medicine.

 

Training Sessions

  • A HAZWOPER Practical training session was offered at the UW Seattle campus on May 17, 2014. Nine students received classroom instruction as well as 8-hours of practical, hands-on training. This activity is one of multiple requirements for a 40-hr HAZWOPER certificate.
  • The Best 'Green' Practices for Laboratories course, a one-day professional development course on best green practices for laboratories, provided training for 52 participants from a different employment sectors and training levels. Course content included information on designing laboratory activities to prevent chemical exposures, strategies for communicating safe chemical use, chemical waste management, and chemical selection.

 

Curriculum Development

  • In coordination with the UW's Professional and Continuing Education Center (PCE), the STAC-TEC team has been developing curricula for a Certificate Program on Sustainability and Green Chemistry, targeting the working professional. This program is a one-year, non-credit certificate consisting of three 10-week courses: Environmental Health and Toxicology, Sustainability and Green Chemistry, and Safer Alternatives Assessments and Decision Making. Bio- and nano-technology case study examples will be used to demonstrate sustainability principles.
