Superfund Research Program
November 2024

Enspired Solutions, a woman-owned environmental remediation company, received an NIEHS Superfund Research Program small business innovation research grant to develop an innovative technology to destroy PFAS contaminants in water.
PFAS have been detected in 97% of people tested, and exposure to PFAS has been linked to health issues like cancer and immune toxicity. Traditional methods for removing PFAS rely on materials like carbon to capture contaminants. However, these methods often generate secondary waste that is difficult and costly to dispose of.
The technology created by Enspired Solutions involves a proprietary chemical mixture that traps PFAS particles and breaks them down after being exposed to ultraviolet light. With NIEHS funding, the company will test this process with a range of real PFAS-laden wastewater samples.
“This system will provide a complete, on-site PFAS capture plus destruction solution that will eliminate secondary waste generation and put an end to the spread of PFAS,” said Suzanne Witt, Ph.D., research director at Enspired Solutions.
