Technology Safety Data Sheets

Technology Safety Data Sheets (TSDSs) are information tools designed to alert workers to the hazards posed by operating and maintaining innovative environmental remediation technologies. In cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, NIEHS hosted two workshops in 1995 that addressed occupational safety and health and emergency response hazards associated with such technologies. The concept of a TSDS was originally presented at the first of these two workshops, which led to the development of a guidance document for creating such tools. Some engineering schools have adopted the format as a method to introduce safety and health concepts into existing coursework. Resources on this page include a summary of discussions and findings from the 1995 workshops, as well as more than 75 TSDSs prepared by the Operating Engineers National Hazmat Program.
