Course Title: EMS Biosafety Transport-Operator Course
Type of Course: Infectious Disease Operations
Description: The EMS Biosafety Transport–Operator Course is an eight-hour program taught by staff from Grady EMS, the Emory Section of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine and the Emory Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR). This program provides education and training for the safe transport of patients who have (or are suspected of having) high-consequence communicable diseases.  The target audience for the course is EMS providers of all types/levels/certifications as well as any other personnel who may be involved in transporting infectious patients. The course consists of 4 hours of classroom instruction in relevant topics such as: nature of high-risk infectious diseases (ie- viral hemorrhagic fevers, smallpox, SARS, novel influenza etc...), infection control precautions, and ambulance modification and specialty equipment for transport of the highly infectious patient. Strategies are aimed at protecting the healthcare worker and the public as well as facilitating the decontamination and disinfection of the ambulance. The classroom instruction is followed by 4 hours of practical exercise in the following areas: -dressing out/modifying an ambulance for use in a high-risk transport -donning/doffing N-95 mask and gown and other PPE -donning/doffing Level C PPE with the use of PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator).

Instructor Qualifications: Alexander Isakov, MD, MPH, the course director, is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in both emergency medicine and EMS medicine. Dr. Isakov co-founded and directs Emory's Section of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, whose team of EMS physicians provides medical oversight for 911 emergency ground and air ambulance responders in the City of Atlanta and the broader metro area. He also founded and directs the Emory-Grady EMS Bio-Safety Transport Program, which supports the Emory University Hospital Serious Communicable Diseases Unit and the CDC for the transport of individuals who pose a serious communicable disease risk. The training cadre is made up of EMS professionals knowledgeable in the management of patients with serious communicable diseases and who have real world experience in the transport and management of persons under investigation for a serious communicable disease as well as patients with confirmed Ebola Virus Disease.
