Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large, complex, and ever-expanding group of manufactured chemicals that are widely used to make a variety of commercial and industrial products, such as food packaging, nonstick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabric, and firefighting foam.

NIEHS-funded scientists study many aspects of PFAS, including possible health effects, sources of exposure, and methods for removing the substances from the environment. Research into potential health outcomes resulting from PFAS exposure also is conducted by the National Toxicology Program. That program is a collaboration among NIEHS, the National Center for Toxicological Research at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
