Final Progress Reports

Year:   2019  2013  2007  2004

The Training Core project addresses the need for a cross-disciplinary graduate education and training program in environmental science. The goals of the Superfund Cross-Disciplinary Training Project are:

  1. to provide thorough training of students in their specific field,
  2. to instill basic knowledge about socioeconomic, law, engineering, and science aspects of environmental sciences outside the students’ major field of study,
  3. to explore the role of nutrition as a modulator of the toxicity of Superfund chemicals, and
  4. to enhance the ability of students to communicate and cooperate with specialists in other disciplines.

This training project is built on successful collaborations among the Superfund faculty, and it enhances/establishes new activities that promote cross-disciplinary education.

The students who received fellowships during the 2007 budget year were Robin Ehrick, Kendrick Turner, and Yuanyuan Zheng. In addition to their research/coursework, students supported by the Training Core participated and presented posters in the Kentucky Research Consortium for Energy and the Environment Scientific and Technical Symposium, co-sponsored by the UK-SBRP. The Training Core committed funds to support several trainees and postdoctoral fellows to present their research at the 16th International Symposium on Microencapsulation in Lexington, KY, and the annual SBRP meeting in Durham, NC. During the 2007 year, Superfund trainees co-authored several publications and gave research presentations at national scientific meetings.
