Final Progress Reports

Year:   2017

The overall goal of the Structure and Properties of Metal Oxide Particle-Adsorbate Systems Project is to develop an understanding of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) at the molecular level in order to learn how to neutralize them and improve public health as a result. This microscopic understanding of EPFRs is critically important to the center, because EPFRs are new chemical species, and traditional methods of dealing with more typical molecular pollutants may not be effective in dealing with EPFRs. In short, what the researchers want to know is, how does one determine if a sample contains an EPFR, and how does one determine if it's simply contaminated with organic material? What unambiguously distinguishes an EPFR from anything else, and how can they inhibit it in their surroundings?
