Final Progress Reports

Year:   2008 

The Analytical Core personnel have been active maintaining instruments used for research projects as well as training project personnel to perform measurements with these instruments. In addition to over 2200 routine analyses on the Graphite Furnace AAS and ICP-AES devices, the mercury vapor and liquid analyzers have been used extensively to assess remediation techniques of mercury removal from vapors and liquid waste streams. Core personnel helped the Genetic Stress And Toxicant-Induced Pregnancy Disruption project researchers quantify PCB's in mice tissues and these results will be presented at the Annual meeting as well as summarized in a paper currently in review. An Innov-X Systems handheld XRF was added to the facility to allow field and lab measurement of metals in soils. Core personnel have helped measure metals in soils from New Orleans, garden plots in Providence, archeological samples, and sediments from Narragansett Bay. To provide easily accessible information for SBRP students and researchers, a website   was developed by Core personnel, containing instrument descriptions and procedures of operation.

Spring Semester 2008, David Murray and Joseph Orchardo worked with ENVS 0490 students on projects related to the topic of metals in the environment. Projects included Hg in milk and fish, Pb in drinking water, and metals in community garden soils. The Pb in drinking water in Providence area schools has developed into a thesis project for a concentrator in Environmental Studies.

Fall Semester 2008, David Murray and Joseph Orchardo worked with GEOL 1370 (Environmental Geochemistry) students to assess nutrient concentrations in the waters and the chemical composition of grab samples taken from the Petaquamscutt River, an estuary and river system in southern Rhode Island. The project included quantifying PAH's in the sediments. The course is taught be co-leader Yongsong Huang.
