Final Progress Reports

Year:   2019  2013  2007  2004

The University of Kentucky SBRP was expanded by bringing together two new groups of investigators.  Hypotheses were developed and tested related to PCB toxicity and diseases, including obesity/hypertension and diabetes.  The use of new “omics” technologies was encouraged to test hypotheses associated with most projects.  The Program Director also organized weekly seminars and meetings to provide opportunities for SBRP researchers to interact and optimize interdisciplinary collaborations and interactions.  SBRP faculty and students met regularly to discuss progress and listen to outside seminar speakers.

In addition to an External Advisory Board, an Internal Advisory Board was established to provide university-wide support, oversight and maximal representation.  The Internal Advisory Board also provides advice about inter-disciplinary activities between the proposed SBRP and the entire academic institution, especially other centers, colleges, departments, as well as central administration.  The Internal Advisory Board is chaired by Dr. Wendy Baldwin (Executive Vice President for Research) and is made up of senior administrators within the Research Foundation and nationally known researchers in Agriculture, Toxicology, Biology, and Medicine, and a student representative, all from the University of Kentucky.

The third international PCB Workshop, entitled “Recent Advances in the Environmental Toxicology and Health Effects of PCBs” was held in Urbana Champaign, IL and was a great success.  It was organized by the University of Kentucky SBRP and researchers from the Universities of Iowa and Illinois.  There were over 130 participants, including about 35 students.  There were six scientific plenary sessions, and 42 posters were presented.  Both best poster awards were awarded to doctoral students from the University of Kentucky SBRP.

Betty Newsom was co-organizer of the Administrators Agenda of this year’s annual SBRP meeting in Seattle, WA.  She was scheduled to give a presentation at a session entitled “Trading Strategies for Taking the Mystery out of Project Management, a General Discussion”.  An additional Program Coordinator (Jennifer Lackey) was hired.  Jennifer came from the University of Kentucky Research Foundation and thus is well experienced in all aspects of grants management, including fiscal and resource management.
