Final Progress Reports

Year:   2016  2009  2004

This core organizes the scientific activities of the program, as well as assuring that the scientific work is communicated nationally.  The core’s major initiative at the end of the 03 year and the beginning of the 04 year was the organization and submission of the competitive renewal for next funding cycle of SBRP.  Because the program was gaining considerable momentum and rapidly evolving over the past two years, this was a daunting undertaking.  The organization of the program required core researchers to initiate and to put into place two major changes.  The first and clearly the most time consuming was the organization of the two new initiatives mandated by the program, the Research Translation and Outreach Cores.  While the Outreach program was not new, it was necessary for the administrative core at UCSD to engineer this core to become integrated with the RT core, a process that culminated in the development of an entirely new Outreach program.  Second, the internal advisors and the program director decided not to include two of the ongoing research programs while integrating a new research program headed by Dr. Sangeeta Bhatia.  Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the SBRP, this required considerable effort to assure that her program was networked with the other research cores and programs.  The organizational strategy mandated that core investigators meet weekly to discuss each program in an attempt to promote the strengths of the cores and research program.  The administrative core handled the weekly, almost daily organizational requirements that they felt essential to impose on the program in order to maintain the flow of information necessary to assemble the application.

While their monthly PI meetings were put on hold from November-03 through June-04, the administrative responsibilities of the core were not altered.  Michelle Feiock, the SBRP administrator, maintained the distribution of monthly budget reports and was completely responsible for the organization and assembly of the competitive renewal.  The program sponsored three Distinguished Seminars, and in early October organized an External Advisory Committee meeting to help in preparation for the anticipated phone review by study section.  The EAC consisted of Dr. Bradfield from the U of Wisconsin, Dr. Guengerich from Vanderbilt, Dr. Johnson from Scripps and Dr. Reed from Oregon.

During the past years, there have been 30 disclosures made, 23 Material Transfer Agreements (material sent out), 5 patent applications filed, and 1 license agreement signed.
