In 2014, project researchers continued their mechanistic investigations of the toxicity of PCB 126, including the effect of PCB 126 on glucose metabolism as well as the effect of hypoxic environments on the PCB 126 activated AhR pathway. Another side project focused on the role of epigenetic mechanisms that might affect CYP1A1 expression after PCB 126 exposure. Next to the interactions between the AhR and hypoxia pathways, another focus was to examine the role of PCB3-quinone in oxidative stress mechanisms.

A new requirement of the RFA this year is that Superfund Centers only have 12 parts (projects and cores). A decision had to be made to reduce the ISRP by one unit. Knowing this, and after hearing all the plans of the ISRP for the renewal (at the September 5, 2013 meeting), the External Advisory Committee recommended that this project not be re-competed. The reasons for this recommendation were that this project had a very limited budget and as a result was not as well-integrated into the ISRP as other components, and some of the topics being addressed by Oxidative Stress and PCB Exposure in Mammalian Cells could be incorporated into other projects, for example PCBs: Metabolism, Genotoxicity, and Gene Expression in vivo. Oxidative Stress and PCB Exposure in Mammalian Cells has trained several Superfund trainees, including one highly successful KC Donnelly Scholar, and produced significant new information as evidenced by several excellent studies/publications (please see the listed publications). Because of the budget restrictions and to strengthen the ISRP application, Dr. Goswami and his team willingly withdrew from the ISRP for the competing renewal that is currently under review.
