Course Title: Responder Safety Awareness
Type of Course: Emerg. Resp. Awareness
Description: After completing the course, the trainee will be able to: • Describe the common ways that the presence of hazmats in an emergency may be recognized • Identify hazardous materials involved in an emergency using information commonly available to first responders • List the DOT hazmat hazard classes and describe the primary hazards of each • Assess an emergency situation involving hazmats and determine the potential bad outcomes that may result • Describe the concept of site control, including isolation and zoning of an incident scene • Use the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook to determine the appropriate actions to take in response to a hazmat incident • Explain the importance of knowing communication procedures and the role of first responder awareness level personnel in the employer's emergency response plan

Instructor Qualifications: Instructors should have a thorough understanding of the topics to be taught. Emergency response experience is important.

Intended Audience: The intended trainee population includes any worker who may be first at the scene of a hazmat incident, such as fire and rescue personnel, police officers, and public works employees. These trainees will respond defensively by calling for help from more highly trained responders and securing the incident scene to protect themselves and others. They should have no potential for exposure to the hazards of an incident.

Caveats: This course is based on training objectives listed in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(i), or equivalent requirements referenced in 40 CFR 311, supplemented with applicable training objectives from NFPA 472.
