Course Title: Infectious Disease Awareness
Type of Course: Infectious Disease Awareness
Description: This course is designed to provide knowledge about health and safety as it relates to infectious diseases. This course will teach workers how infectious diseases are spread in the work environment and how to protect themselves from potential exposure. Workers will learn about the history of infectious diseases (including Ebola), the three categories of Priority Pathogens/Agents as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), how to recognize potential hazards, about risk reduction and infection prevention, appropriate application of workplace controls, worker protection including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), isolation and containment procedures, decontamination, and waste management, including the shipping and transporting of infectious materials. Workers will also learn about behavioral resiliency, such as coping with work-related stress, protection from mental or physical exhaustion and the promotion of psychosocial health and minimization of fear.

Intended Audience: Workers who may come into contact with infectious disease pathogens when undertaking job tasks. These workers would not be involved in response activities related to decontamination and disinfection of facilities during a major disease outbreak or disaster.
Prerequisites: None
Caveats: This course provides basic information on infectious disease for workers who could come into contact with pathogens but would not expect to be part of a response to an outbreak or disaster situation. Response, remediation, and cleanup workers should take the Infectious Disease Operations course.
Special Instructions: This 4-hour course can be included as additional training for Infection Control Risk Assessment to provide workers at health care facilities with knowledge and skills to help them identify hazards and protect themselves and others from infection. Participants must achieve a score of 80% or higher on the final exam to pass the course.
