Course Title: Union Approach to Health and Safety Training, April 2010
Type of Course: General Industry Safety
Description: Using a "Continuous Bargaining" Approach to Improve Workplace Health and Safety and Build Union Power. This course provides tools to help local unions create safer, healthier workplaces, involve members in the union's health and safety activities, develop creative strategies to get tough problems addressed and build local union strength. Classes can be tailored to specific needs of local unions and can range from a half-day to several days. Below are some sample topic areas. Contact the USW Tony Mazzocchi Center to discuss these and other topics and design a course that will meet particular needs. • Understanding and Developing a Union Approach to Health and Safety • Establishing and Strengthening Safety and Health Committees • Confronting "Blame-the-Worker" Safety Programs: Ending or Preventing Behavior-Based Safety (including employer practices that discourage workers from reporting injuries/illnesses, behavioral observation programs and more) • Identifying and Addressing Health and Safety Impacts of Work Restructuring and Workplace Change • "Continuous Bargaining" Over Health and Safety: Developing Strategic Campaigns to Get Tough Health and Safety Problems Addressed • Tools to Track Workplace Injuries and Illnesses, Identify Hazards, and Exercise Whistleblower Rights to Prevent and Address Retaliation for Injury Reporting • Involving Members in Hazard Identification (including body, hazard and life mapping, developing and conducting union health and safety surveys and more) and Hazard Control (using the Hierarchy of Controls) • Introduction to "Looking for Trouble" – The USW's model comprehensive workplace safety and health program
Training Provider: The Steelworkers Charitable and Educational Organization
Instructor Qualifications: One week training course, Training-the-Trainers, and apprenticeship under other instructors and a yearly 32 hour technical refresher course.
