Project Summary (1995-2000)

This research core serves a vital role by enabling the trainees to extend their specific research contributions on individual projects to the overall Cornell SBREP effort. Students and postdoctoral scientists not only gain state of the art disciplinary research training in individual laboratories but also gain important team skills through this core. These environmental team efforts are necessary to translate fundamental research from several disciplines to the resolution of actual Superfund problems. Students learn both individual skills and the motivation to frame specific environmental expertise into broader scientific initiatives. Given the essential role that these and similar future trainees will play in the environmental health of this country, the balance of specialized research skills with an orientation for broader scientific participation is an absolute necessity.
