Project Summary (1995-2000)

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) affect cultural identity and practices, neuropsychological functioning and overall quality of life of the Mohawk people of Akwesasne. This tribe is located within close proximity to the Massena, NY Superfund site, which is known to contain high levels of PCBs. The extent of PCB exposure is determined by measurement of body burden level. Perceived impact of the exposure is examined as well. The study also examines the extent to which these factors are related to depression and psychological distress.
