Project Summary (1995-2000)

The long-term goal of this project is to develop and characterize new materials that can immobilize and facilitate the degradation of organic chemicals and metal compounds in the environment, particularly in soils and groundwater. As part of this project, work is underway to understand the effects of these new materials on the characteristics of the soil environment. This knowledge will be essential in evaluating: (1) whether soil modification is a viable approach for remediation of hazardous wastes; (2) if so, what engineering techniques are most feasible for exploiting this approach; and (3) the effects of key design parameters on the performance of such systems.
