Project Summary (1995-2000)

The goal of this project is to understand the relationship between inflammation and chemically-induced toxicity. To accomplish this goal, investigations are underway to: (1) understand the roles of resident liver macrophages, Kuppfer cells and Kuppfer cell-derived lipid mediators in the enhancement of chemically derived liver toxicity by inflammation induced by bacterial endotoxin; and (2) understand the molecular mechanisms by which chemicals alter the function of inflammatory cells. The second investigation is focused on the effects of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides on signal transduction pathways in neutrophils (a type of white blood cell).
