Project Summary (2000-2005)

Halogenated organic compounds--such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated and polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs and PCDEs)--are important Superfund and environmental contaminants. Complex mixtures of these compounds can be found in the environment. Core investigators synthesize pure PCB, PBDE and PCDE congeners as well as their metabolites. The following list includes all initially requested organohalogen compounds: PCB congeners, hydroxylated PCB metabolites, 3,4-Arene oxides, benzoquinone metabolites and glutathione conjugates of PCBs, PBDE and PCDE congeners. These compounds are synthesized with straightforward synthetic approaches that are well-established in this laboratory.
